Drainage and Flood Risk

Recent changes to planning policy to counteract the possible future effects of climate change are causing flood risk to become an ever more frequent and high profile presence in the planning process. All sites in flood zones 2 and 3, together with all sites larger than 1 hectare, require a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) to accompany the planning application. We, therefore, recommend early involvement in schemes to allow our engineers the opportunity to optimise the effective inclusion of flood risk reduction measures.

We offer technical advice on:

  • Drainage strategy for planning purposes
  • Site surface water run-off drainage strategies
  • Flood storage compensation volume assessment and design
  • Flood Risk Assessments
  • Advice regarding Sequential and Exception Tests
  • Flood Evacuation Plans and advise on safe site and exit
  • River catchment flow assessment using the Flood Estimation Handbook
  • Hydraulic structure assessment and design
  • Design of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS)
  • Reviews of existing FRAs and pre-purchase advice regarding flooding
