Calcinotto were involved in this project from an early stage, carrying out extensive condition and structural surveys on the various existing barns and farm buildings.

Challenge

Remodelling a farm into dwellings

Calcinotto worked extensively to renovate and remodell into dwellings, including a double-height barn and a traditional farmhouse.

Solution

A reinvention of the area

The buildings were of traditional brick construction with timber pitched roofs incorporating large individual oak trusses, which were replicated in locations where load-bearing walls were being removed.

Due to the age of some of the farm buildings, extensive and bespoke remedials works had to be designed and detailed to restore the fabric of the building within this local conservation area. Careful consideration had to be given to how the remedial works would be incorporated into the existing structure by the builder to cause minimum disruption. Water-proofing and insulation was a major concern and, in conjunction with the Architect, both aspects had to be addressed to bring the renovated dwellings up to current standards.

Calcinotto had been appointed to provide both civil and structural engineering design services.

With the introduction of several new-build houses, the drainage had to be carefully designed around the congested site, incorporating various soakaways, permeable paving and attenuation tanks.

Calcinotto provided civil and structural services for this redevelopment/refurbishment project.
