Julian Calcinotto

Managing Director

Started: 2003

As a fully qualified Chartered Civil Engineer, Structural Engineer and Building Engineer, Julian’s career spans over 30 years. He has worked for some of the leading consultancies including the now Babtie, AECOM and AKSWard.

He began his engineering career working for the Divisional Civil Engineers Department at British Rail and then progressed to become a site/tunnel Engineer working on the Jubilee Line Extension of London Underground whilst completing his BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering, which he gained a 1st class honours degree and was awarded a prize for Engineering Student of the Year at University.

Julian has also spent time during his career undertaking both Site Engineering and Agent roles working on numerous projects such as Tate Modern, Heathrow BBA Headquarters, UCL and Brunel University and Southampton University etc etc

Since founding Calcinotto in 2003, the business under Julian’s guidance has flourished into a locally and nationally recognised and respected civil and structural consultancy, with clients as varied as McCarthy & Stone, Quantum Group, Troika, Lok N store, H & M, Boots, Meggitt, Associated British Ports, University of Southampton, Bournemouth Development Company, Morgan Sindall, Midas, Volkerfitzpatrick and Vinci to name a few along with clients in the Health and Education Sector.

Matthew Singleton

Director

Started: 2006

During his career spanning over 20 years, Matt has worked as a fully qualified Chartered Structural and Building Engineer for some of the UK’s leading consultancies on a wide variety of projects including commercial, industrial, residential, educational and health developments.

Matt graduated in 1998 from the University of Plymouth, where he won the British Steel Regional and National Sheet Piling awards. After graduating, he worked for a main contractor as a Site Engineer before moving to consultancy.

He has project involvement from initial scheme appraisal, structural survey and detailed design through to site supervision. Due to the variety of projects undertaken in both the private and public sector, he has design experience in steel, concrete, masonry, timber and glass, with previous projects including the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, Dorset Police Headquarters Firearms Unit, Kingston Maurward College Learning Resource Centre, a ten-storey concrete frame in the centre of Bournemouth and the New Maternity Unit at Bournemouth Hospital.

Matt has in-depth knowledge and experience in both 2D and 3D computer modelling analysis and design, including Finite Element Analysis of both linear and non-linear elements ranging from concrete to glass.

Alex Wait

Associate Director

Started: 2006

As an Associate Director with over 18 years’ experience in the consulting sector of the industry. He has gained experience working on a wide variety of projects including commercial, industrial, residential, educational and health developments.

Alex gained his academic qualifications from Solent University (previously Southampton Institute), receiving awards for high achievement. Alex spent the first 4 years of his career working for a structural steelwork specialist, where he gained an in-depth knowledge of design and detailing of steel structures, as well as the fabrication process and financial aspects of the steelwork industry.

He is involved in projects from initial conceptual scheme designs through to the final detailed design stage and continues to manage the engineering of projects through to completion on site. Due to the variety of projects undertaken, he has design experience in the majority of structural materials including steel, concrete, masonry, timber and glass.

Alex has extensive knowledge and experience in both 2D and 3D computer modelling analysis and design, including Finite Element Analysis of both linear and non-linear elements ranging from concrete to glass. As well as experience and knowledge of structural computer analysis and design, Alex is fully trained in the use of AutoCAD and Revit, with the ability to produce high-quality drawings and details.

Paul Westcott

Associate Director

Started: 2014

For the first 14 years of his career, Paul worked within a Local Government environment at Rugby Borough Council followed by Bournemouth Borough Council, working as an Engineering Technician alongside senior and principal engineers, where the local Water Authorities were providing funding for capital drainage schemes as part of the Agency Agreement held with each Local Authority. Experience gained was principally in the design and detailing of drainage and its’ on-site construction. Projects ranged from £50k to approx. £1M, where he was regularly posted as a site-based resident engineer monitoring the works, agreeing valuations and final accounts.

For the last 25 years, he has been employed as a Consulting Civil Engineer within engineering consultancies, gaining valuable and considerable experience working with Clients, Developers, Contractors and Architects in all sectors, taking projects from early concept through planning into schematic and detailed design, construction and completion/handover. Since 2014, Paul has established himself at Calcinotto overseeing the Civils and Highways team across the company and has recently been promoted to Associate Director .

His broad experience encompasses all building/development sectors including residential, commercial, industrial, retail, education, health and local government. Paul is able to enter into detailed negotiations with external bodies, including the Water Authorities, Highway Authorities, Environment Agency, Land Drainage Authorities and Land Drainage Boards, as part of the planning process and through to detailed design in order to satisfy and obtain technical approvals for the proposed project.

Julie Phelps

Business Development Manager

BEng (Hons) CEng MICE

Started: 2014

Julie has nearly 30 years experience since her graduation in 1989 with an honours degree in Civil Engineering. During her early years as a Section Engineer with a main contractor, Julie was the first female to win the RH Clarke Memorial Award, open to national graduates. Her experience is expansive and varied including most sectors: education, commercial, leisure, residential and health. In addition to her technical skills, Julie has been heavily involved in early concept development, assessing risks and carrying out due diligence studies, working towards securing projects through development support for our clients.

Julie is well versed in leading a project team, whilst delivering sustainable solutions to meet the project needs and priorities. Her involvement early in the project process ensures a thorough understanding of the critical factors and clarification of the brief. Julie has experience and knowledge in most building materials including concrete, steelwork, timber and masonry, which allow her to provide a robust and extensive input into the scheme development and detailed design.

Julie is a key part of the ongoing Business Development for Calcinotto.

Sam McGowan

Office Manager

Started: 2009

Sam has been with Calcinotto for nearly 10 years and is an invaluable part of our team, providing support to the Directors and Engineers on a daily basis. On joining the company, she brought a wealth of industry experience with her, having spent the previous 6 years at a local Architectural practice.

As Office Manager, Sam is involved with most apects of the business and is often the first person our clients speak to when they make contact with the company or visit the office, providing a professional first impression our company. Whilst running the day-to-day workings of the office environment and providing valuable secretarial support to all of the staff, particularly in the production of technical reports and proposal documents, she is also responsible to the Directors for invoicing and credit control together with organising events such as lunchtime seminars and company away days.
