Calcinotto were appointed to Infinity Labs, a new R&D Facility located on campus of the University of Southampton, as part of their Science Park.
Challenge
Creating the curve over a three-storey development
Also known as ‘The Curve’, the facility will deliver 3,400m² of laboratory and office space and acts as the gateway between the Campus and the Science Park, as part of the 2050 Masterplan proposed by the Science Park.
Calcinotto is providing structural solutions to achieve the ambitious curved design while ensuring adaptability for future tenants. The structure incorporates large open spans, supporting flexible laboratory layouts and long-term resilience. Civil engineering input includes site infrastructure, drainage, and external levels, integrating the new facility into its landscaped setting.

Solution
Putting sustainability as the main features
The lab features a striking glazed façade, with vertical aluminium fins to maximise natural daylight and control solar gain. A sloping sedum roof has been put in place to enhance biodiversity whilst blending the building within the parkland setting.
Calcinotto is providing civil and structural engineering services from RIBA Stages 3 to 6, using a reinforced concrete frame on piled foundations, with roof-level steelwork supporting the plant and green roof. On the civil side, we have designed site-wide levels, drainage and attenuation systems, car parking, as well as Revit modelling.
