Ipswich Make Ready Hub is a purpose-built ambulance facility to replace an outdated base and deliver a modern 24/7 operational centre. The development also helps to keep more ambulances on the road whilst improving facilities for staff.

Challenge

Improving response capacity & welfare facilities

The hub enables ambulances to be cleaned, restocked and maintained efficiently before redeployment, improving response capacity across Ipswich and the surrounding region. After completion the hub now provides a resilient, efficient and future-focused base for approximately 100 staff.

The development comprises a two-storey steel-framed maintenance and welfare building, dedicated workshop and vehicle preparation areas, an above-ground fuel installation, external hardstanding, and a multi-storey car park.

Solution

Fitting sustainable features within the site layout

Structurally, the building is formed from a two-storey steel frame supported on reinforced concrete pad foundations. A reinforced concrete ground slab supports workshop operations, while precast concrete planks form the first floor. Lateral stability is achieved through a combination of braced bays and moment-resisting frames, delivering a robust and efficient structural solution suited to a busy operational environment.

Below ground, the drainage strategy was carefully developed to balance operational requirements with environmental protection. Dedicated forecourt and washdown separators prevent contamination from fuel and vehicle cleaning processes entering the public network. Surface water is attenuated on site and discharged at a controlled rate, with allowance made for future climate change. A penstock valve allows isolation of the drainage system in the event of fuel spillage, adding an additional safeguard.
