Our client, Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundations Trust, required the relocation of some services from Dorchester County Hospital together with delivering place based community and primary care services.
Challenge
Repurposing vacant space for additional Healthcare services.
Vacant space was available in a Dorset County Council owned property, South Walks House, and the design team were tasked with validating the existing structural and civil design for the proposed new function at upper ground and level 1 of the building. In addition, some works were required within the lower ground floor to facilitate to the works above, including installation of new piled foundations.
Solution
A structural and access solution
The Outpatient Assessment Centre opened February 2024. The building is being used for a combination of clinical and office purposes. The clinical space includes outpatient appointments, diagnostics, day cases and a procedure room and will help to reduce waiting times and free up space on the main hospital site for other clinical services.
Strengthening works were required to the existing floors as new risers needed to be formed through the concrete composite deck floor, whilst retaining the integrity of both the structural steel frame and the composite action of the floor plate.
The foul and surface water drainage had to be validated, with CCTV surveys carried out to confirm routes of existing runs.
