Our client, Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundations Trust, has commissioned Phase Two of the works on the site of the existing St Ann’s site in Poole, Dorset.

Challenge

Create specialist facilities for Mental Health

Calcinotto have been commissioned to provide civil and structural engineering service for the development of a new PICU/AMH building within the existing St Anns site. The project consists of a new build specialist care building spread over two storeys together with remodelling/refurbishment works to three existing wards (Chine, Haven and Almhurst). The new-build element will provide a 6-bed female PICU, a 7-bed male PICU and a 14-bed mixed use AMH.

Solution

Designed for well-being and comfort

At this early stage, the main structural frame comprises reinforced concrete columns and flat slab at all levels, with the foundation solution to be determined upon receipt of the ground investigation.

The drainage strategy utilises existing drainage systems within the site to discharge the foul and surface water from the new development by gravity.

The development allows for the following:

  • improved emergency support and standards of care for adults
  • patients can access the specialist care they need
  • the latest facilities will improve recovery times
  • treatment will be close to friends and family, with space for families to stay if needed
  • fewer distressing out-of-area placements, which separates people from their loved ones, hampering their chances of recovery.
Calcinotto provided both civil and structural engineering consultancy services for this development.
