This Bournemouth Borough Council Children’s Strategic Services project at St Michael’s C of E Primary School was essentially four different projects within one development.
Challenge
Create an operational school focusing on Sustainability
Calcinotto was appointed at RIBA Stage 2 to deliver a multi-faceted development comprising four key projects: a new two-storey concrete-framed building, a two-storey steel-framed building extending over an existing school structure, the refurbishment of a three-storey Victorian villa, and an extension to the existing hall and classrooms.
Solution
A further insight into sustainable practices
Calcinotto provided valuable input into pre-construction planning and construction methodology, which allowed to the project to meet the stringent health and safety requirements essential for an operational school. This was achieved by working with the Main Contractor to review logistics across the project and provide comments on the build programme.
Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the life of this project, with several items focussed upon during detailed design stage including:
- An enhanced daylight strategy was developed to achieve a reduced use of artificial lighting throughout the incorporation of glazed panels.
- Thermal studies were undertaken to ensure a balance between maximising daylight and optimising the thermal gain/loss.
