The Quest is a replacement dwelling in Swanage, Dorset. Planning permission was granted in early 2014 and the project was completed in January 2016.

Challenge

Creating the space needed for a carport

Calcinotto worked with award-winning Strom Architects during the construction phase to assist them in delivering this truly amazing home.

The site is heavily wooded and enjoys a beautiful southerly aspect with a view over the Durlston Country Park. Early in the design process, Ström Architects established the advantages of a single-storey building; identifying that it would suit the retired clients’ future needs.

Solution

Cantileving with honest construction methods

The single-storey house cantilevers over a new retaining wall to deal effectively with the level changes and views. The large cantilever over the parking bay has been achieved through two concrete planes: the floor and roof acting together as a space beam yet somehow not visually connected. The concrete structure is then in-filled with simple timber dry-lining, leaving the concrete frame visible externally.

The house exemplifies the Architect’s belief that simplicity and honesty of construction underlie good design. Good sound knowledge and understanding of engineering principles are the reason why things work accompanied by modern-day design tools such a finite element analysis which allow us to push the boundaries of design.
