The project provided a new recycling process facility at Mannings Heath, Ling Road in Poole, Dorset.
Challenge
Creating an industrial space culture
The building consisted of a steel portal-frame warehouse structure, enclosing a large working area for the
processing and sorting of recyclable materials.

Solution
Designing around the footprint of the area
The structure houses several large pieces of permanent plant and is on two levels, separated by a retaining wall. One corner of the building contains a four-storey office/personnel area, which is separated from the working area by partition walls, and which houses stairs and a lift. The footprint of the building was aligned along two angles to fit the shape of the rear site boundary. The building contains several large roller-shutter door openings to enable access for lorries, and personnel doors.
The main superstructure consists of steel portal frames on a regular grid, with cold-roller purlins and rails between portals and profiled metal sheet cladding. The office area has intermediate concrete floors formed using composite decking, and a timber joist roof. The partitions/walls to the office area are traditional blockwork
